Back to Reality

After an wonderful Vaca to Vegas with hubby and some amazing friends it's back to Reality. Oh how I wish my only job was to watch Cole. Instead I have to commute 45min both ways to work and tomorrow there calling for snow early morning which usually means lots of traffic.dislike.

Anyway Vegas was awesome! We stayed at Aria located in the City Center, I really can't say I disliked anything about the hotel it was top notch. We got to hang out with our friends sans kids, win some money and eat great food. I just wish I could have gotten more sleep but I suppose Vegas really isn't known for that.:)
4 nights away from little man was as much as I could handle, it feels great to be back and just love all over him.I took a few pictures but not nearly as many as I had wished to. Actually I only took pictures the first day.fail.

Oh Happy Day!

I was on a mission the moment I got home Friday evening from work. I gave Cole tons of smooches and told him that tonight he would be going to sleep in his crib. Low and behold he did just that! After the usual bedtime routine, I kissed him goodnight hoping this would not be to dramatic for both him and me. Right away he spit out the pacifier. Oh crap here we go. Then the winy not really crying started. Then the crying. I waited 3 minutes. 3 minutes felt like forever. I went in put his pacifier in and he closed his eyes and turned his head and off to sleep he went.Ummm wait, did that just really happen ...3 minutes is all he needed?!? What a huge relief...but now I thought would it last. At around 11pm, he started screaming...yes screaming with his eye's sealed shut. I wanted to just run right in and pick him up but I waited. I had to wait.I waited 5min till I sent Cam in to soothe him. No go, the screaming continued. I watched the clock...10 min...that's how long we were prepared to wait...then at minute 8 he reached to his side picked up his pacifier and proceeded to put it back in his mouth and fall asleep. He stayed that way till 7am. God bless my child for being so resourceful! We all woke up Saturday morning feeling so rested. Oh Happy Day!

The next two nights went even smoother, and required no clock watching. Cole went right to sleep and seems to be back to his old ways! He's even sleeping more now, 7pm to 7am! I do believe it worked so well because Cole was more then ready to go back to his crib he just needed a little help from us to get him back in the swing of things.

And now I have my bed back. My husband back in bed. And sleep. Oh how I have missed my sleep. Thanks for all the suggestions and ideas from my fellow mommies, it really was so helpful!

Things Kids Born Today May Never Know

I was sent this article from Money Talks about how life has changed this past decade and how things I grew up with Cole will probably never even know about. Before even reading this article, Cam and me have joked how Cole will most likely have an iphone and a facebook account by age 5! Technology is on warp speed, I can only imagine what life will be like in 10 years from now. Below are some of the one's that seemed most interesting to me.

Do you think kids born in 2011 will recognize any of the following?

Video tape

Travel agents: While not dead today, this profession is one of many that's been decimated by the Internet. When it's time for their honeymoon, will those born in 2011 be able to find one?

The separation of work and home: When you're carrying an email-equipped computer in your pocket, it's not just your friends who can find you -- so can your boss. For kids born this year, the wall between office and home will be blurry indeed.

Books, magazines, and newspapers: Like video tape, words written on dead trees are on their way out. Sure, there may be books -- but for those born today, stores that exist solely to sell them will be as numerous as record stores are now.

Movie rental stores: You actually got in your car and drove someplace just to rent a movie?

Watches: Maybe as quaint jewelry, but the correct time is on your smartphone, which is pretty much always in your hand.

Paper maps: At one time these were available free at every gas station. They're practically obsolete today, and the next generation will probably have to visit a museum to find one.

Wired phones: Why would you pay $35 every month to have a phone that plugs into a wall? For those born today, this will be a silly concept.

Long distance: Thanks to the Internet, the days of paying more to talk to somebody in the next city, state, or even country are limited.

Newspaper classifieds: The days are gone when you have to buy a bunch of newsprint just to see what's for sale.

Dial-up Internet: While not everyone is on broadband, it won't be long before dial-up Internet goes the way of the plug-in phone.

Encyclopedias: Imagine a time when you had to buy expensive books that were outdated before the ink was dry. This will be a nonsense term for babies born today.

Forgotten friends: Remember when an old friend would bring up someone you went to high school with, and you'd say, "Oh yeah, I forgot about them!" The next generation will automatically be in touch with everyone they've ever known even slightly via Facebook.

Forgotten anything else: Kids born this year will never know what it was like to stand in a bar and incessantly argue the unknowable. Today the world's collective knowledge is on the computer in your pocket or purse. And since you have it with you at all times, why bother remembering anything?

The evening news: The news is on 24/7. And if you're not home to watch it, that's OK -- it's on the smartphone in your pocket.

CDs: First records, then 8-track, then cassette, then CDs -- replacing your music collection used to be an expensive pastime. Now it's cheap(er) and as close as the nearest Internet connection.

Film cameras: For the purist, perhaps, but for kids born today, the word "film" will mean nothing. In fact, even digital cameras -- both video and still -- are in danger of extinction as our pocket computers take over that function too.

Yellow and White Pages: Why in the world would you need a 10-pound book just to find someone?

Catalogs: There's no need to send me a book in the mail when I can see everything you have for sale anywhere, anytime. If you want to remind me to look at it, send me an email.

Fax machines: Can you say "scan," ".pdf" and "email?"

Wires: Wires connecting phones to walls? Wires connecting computers, TVs, stereos, and other electronics to each other? Wires connecting computers to the Internet? To kids born in 2011, that will make as much sense as an electric car trailing an extension cord.

Hand-written letters: For that matter, hand-written anything. When was the last time you wrote cursive? In fact, do you even know what the word "cursive" means? Kids born in 2011 won't -- but they'll put you to shame on a tiny keyboard.

Talking to one person at a time: Remember when it was rude to be with one person while talking to another on the phone? Kids born today will just assume that you're supposed to use texting to maintain contact with five or six other people while pretending to pay attention to the person you happen to be physically next to.

Retirement plans: Yes, Johnny, there was a time when all you had to do was work at the same place for 20 years and they'd send you a check every month for as long as you lived. In fact, some companies would even pay your medical bills, too!

Mail: What's left when you take the mail you receive today, then subtract the bills you could be paying online, the checks you could be having direct-deposited, and the junk mail you could be receiving as junk email?

Commercials on TV: They're terrifically expensive, easily avoided with DVRs, and inefficiently target mass audiences. Unless somebody comes up with a way to force you to watch them -- as with video on the Internet -- who's going to pay for them?

Commercial music radio: Smartphones with music-streaming programs like Pandora are a better solution that doesn't include ads screaming between every song.

Hiding: Not long ago, if you didn't answer your home phone, that was that -- nobody knew if you were alive or dead, much less where you might be. Now your phone is not only in your pocket, it can potentially tell everyone -- including advertisers -- exactly where you are.

Sleep, What's that?

Cole has officially not slept in his crib since waking up with a fever early morning on Dec 27Th, yep that means for the last 10 days he has been co-sleeping with me. I had no problem or even questioned bringing him to our bed when he was sick but it seems like it will never end. Cam has been banished to the guest room and I haven't slept longer then 3hrs in a row because Cole likes to move a lot in his sleep. Everyone keeps telling me that once he feels better he will go back to his old sleeping patterns but I just don't think that's going to happen. The last three nights we have attempted and have failed at getting him to fall asleep in his crib.
This is a foreign thing to us, Cole has NEVER given us any issues when it comes to bedtime. I know it sounds crazy but before he was sick his routine was like this, bedtime bottle, change into pj's , read some books and then zip him up in his sleep sack and off to sleep he went on his OWN. There would be a little bit of stirring but for the most part he was happy to be going to sleep. Man did I take for granted how easy we had it.
Now we put him down and he cries, he won't even take his pacifier. Just spits it right out. I have picked him up laid him back down, cry. Rocked him till he's just about to fall asleep then laid him in his crib, cry. I have stood by his crib holding his hand till he drifts off, cry. He wakes up right away looking for some comfort. It's like he's scared to sleep alone. Which breaks my heart.
At some point we are going to have to be tough and try out this whole Cry it Out (CIO) method, but just the idea of it makes me squirm. After all Cole has been through these past 2 weeks this seems beyond cruel. I know it works but it feels like just when my child is back up I'm knocking him down again. How do parents do CIO?!?
My plan is to give him one more night in our bed and then we will attempt to let him CIO, god give us strength.

Six Months!

I'm about a week late but I didn't want it to pass by without posting something about Cole turning 6 months! Since this seems to be my version of a baby book for my dear little man.

Cole you are blossoming into an amazing little BOY. You can officially sit on your own with just a little bit of swaying when you get lazy. You are such a good eater..doesn't matter what it is peas or pears you will eat it! When going out to eat you now sit in the big boy high chair and ride in the front of the cart when grocery shopping. You say da da to pretty much everything and aren't afraid to scream to make sure everyone knows your in the room. I believe you have another tooth trying to make it's way out which seems to be causing you a bit more pain then your two bottom teeth. You light up when you see your grandparents which melts my heart. Your obsessed with grabbing my phone and of course the remote control. Your favorite toys are the fisher price piano and Scout the dog. Mommy and Daddy can't help but sing along with Scout, house favorite is "Me and My Friend Cole". You love to mimic anyone who sticks there tongue out at you. You weigh in at 18lbs and 12oz and 26inches which puts you right at 50% of where your peers are at. Your wearing 9 month clothing and some 12 months. You give so much love to everyone near you and are just generally a happy little boy. I love you so much and can't believe 6 months have come and gone. Your a rock star baby I can't wait to see what you do the next 6 months!

xoxo

Cole Meets Grant

So before Cole was sick (seems like a life time ago) he had a chance to meet Grant! Grant is an adorable cutie who calls Charlotte home, but luckily he was here in Maryland for the holiday's so we got to meet him! He's mama Jen went to school with both Cam and me, with only 7 weeks separating them we were so excited to get them together! These two future heart breakers didn't "play" to much but did get some good face time in and a little bit of grabbing too. :)

The boys looking at us like what's the big deal?!?

One hard week

It's been 7 days of complete misery here at the Shinaberry household. My poor sweet baby has been so sick and just can't seem to get rid of this awful virus. It all started early Monday morning when I was awoken by Cole crying at 2am, this is very unlike him so I knew something was wrong. I picked him up and right away could feel he was warm, so Tylenol and into bed with us he went. When morning came it was clear he wasn't feeling well, all he wanted was to be held so that's exactly what we did. He's temperature spiked up to 102.7 so we were off to nighttime pediatrics. Which didn't do much for us but give us peace of mind he would be OK through that night.
Tuesday morning Cole slept a lot and was very warm so we kept him sans clothes to try and keep him cool. That's when we saw the rash beginning to emerge, all over his back then to his stomach. Cole spent another night in our bed with me but little sleep was had. So back to the doctor's we went, the next two days were a blur and Cole just seemed to get worse.

Thursday evening it was clear things were not OK with Cole, he's temperature had gone up and his breathing seemed like a struggle for him. We made our way to the ER hoping for some relief for our sweet little boy. The real concern was that he was on day 4 of a high fever that's when talks of a disease called Kawasaki came up. It's a very rare disease and some of the symptoms are a high fever, rash all over, red eyes and swollen palms and feet. The really scary thing is if untreated it can cause real problems to the heart. Cole had ALL of these symptoms so they had to rule out any chance he may have this awful disease. Thank god everything came back ok and we were able to go home Friday evening right in time to ring in the New Year!

Seeing your baby so sick and in pain is heartbreaking. I cried many times hoping for just some mild relief for him. I can't put into words how helpless I felt and not knowing what was wrong with him was even worse. All the poking and prodding made things even worse and I think it will be awhile until he is ok from the experience. He still has a mild fever and still wants nothing more then to be held. But there has been moments of normal Cole. A few smiles and even a laugh and the awful rash has gone away. There seems to be a light at the end of this long week, I just wish it would get here already!

In the ER waiting...
